What happens to my Transcriptions

“Finished proofing this diary of Roseltha’s.  Made me feel like I had lost a friend when I reached the notification of her death.“ – G. Lather

A hand typing on a laptop keyboard while a digitized diary is displayed on the screen. The screen shows a transcription interface, with handwritten diary text on the left and typed text on the right.

Your transcriptions will appear live on the site immediately and can be reviewed and edited by others. The webmaster will finalize your transcriptions as “complete” once all the pages of the diary are transcribed. Your work will then be reviewed and proofread. The proofed transcriptions will be stored with the digitized handwritten pages as a permanent metadata record and migrated to their permanent home in the digital collection at the University of Guelph, where they will be safely preserved for the future. The proofed transcription, along with the handwritten, version will be available for the public to search and read in the SEARCH section of the Rural Diary Archive website. In this manner, people can read the transcriptions and have the option of comparing the transcribed version with the original.
