Francis Goring

This diary dates to the founding years of Upper Canada. Francis is well educated and had previously lived at Fort Niagara during the American Revolution where he was a clerk for a trading company. After the war, he receives 200 acres and begins farming. He opens the first schoolhouse in April 1790 and tutors the children of several prominent families: the Secords, Hamiltons, Butlers, and others. He records his farm work, lists his students and visitors, and includes accounts for 1788-1797 that extend beyond the diary years.
