Harriet Brock

Harriet’s voyage from the British Isles to Canada in 1835 is bumpy to say the least. She arrives “half dead with fatigue,” and her dresses and bonnets are found in complete ruins. While leaving home brings great sadness, Harriet finds happiness in taking long walks in the morning with her husband, Robert. She tries to enjoy the small moments in life, despite battling poor health and living in a “second Siberia.” Indeed, Harriet’s diaries, while small in scope, reveal the hardships of settlement in Upper Canada.
