Walter Hope

Walter’s imagination is palpable in his writings. His 1847 diary begins with a phonetic translation of the Lord’s Prayer in a language he refers to as “warmsoonoag,” which stems largely from his Gaelic roots. While much of Walter’s diaries discuss lumbering, barn raising, and his transactions at the general store, he denotes a few entries to curious speculation—most notably his estimates as to the number of human beings on earth since creation!
